A dreamy romance film, La La Land feels like a salute to Gene Kelly’s Singin’ In The Rain. I must admit when the first act played, having no idea the film was somewhat of a musical, I thought that I was in for a less than enjoyable experience with a Hairspray feel. Someone actually walked out of the cinema, however I urge you to stick with it if Hairspray is not your usual flavour of film! I promise it is not your usual musical, and apart from two cheesy songs the rest of the music is a recurring song performed by Gosling that becomes the theme of the film.
Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) plays a jazz pianist with dreams of opening his own jazz bar. He meets Mia (Emma Stone), a barista and budding actress, and we watch how their chance encounter unfolds. This film is smooth and rich and, as the lyrics to Sebastian’s song goes, “here’s to the fools who dream”. I recommend you go and see this cinematic magic.
