I really didn’t know what to expect from Doctor Strange. In fact I didn’t think it would be very good after watching the trailer but… I was wrong. What makes this Marvel film so good is that it isn’t anything like a Marvel film. With Inception-inspired moments and no obvious references to the Marvel universe (except the post-credits scenes) it really separates itself from the generic superhero world. It is a genuine filmmaking masterpiece with exceptional visual effects whilst also employing some dizzying camera work and an excellent script.
The only gripe I would have with the film is that there is a giant thing (Dormammu) in the sky trying to destroy the world. It’s very cliché and reminds me a lot of movies like Ghostbusters and, more recently, Suicide Squad. But don’t let that deter you; Benedict Cumberbatch delivered an exceptional performance as usual, as did Tilda Swinton. And well done to Marvel for bagging two incredibly talented actors for this film. Doctor Strange is one of very few Marvel characters that I will be keeping a close eye on. With origin stories usually being the best in the franchise, let’s hope the next one in the series doesn’t fall flat (like those Spiderman films).
